However when I try to use a USB 3.0 extension cable (male to female), tried several 3 ft and 10 ft, in order to place a USB 3.0 powered hub with several hard drives hanging off it in a better location, the disconnects randomly happen. Shorter cables (approx 3 feet or less) seem to work fine. The Renesas controller (at least on the older two laptops I'm using) appears to be very picky about the length of the USB 3.0 cable to either the USB 3.0 device or to a USB 3.0 hub or the use of a USB 3.0 extension cable (male to female). If using USB extender cables or longer length USB cables, try shorter cables.

Spend years trying to find ways around this issue, ended up having to put second and additional external hard drives on the USB 2.0 ports.Īfter updating the listed drivers in the Windows 10 Updates - Optional Drivers section I was able to run two external USB 3.0 hard drives on the Renesas USB 3.0 port without them (fingers crossed) or other USB 3.0 devices disconnecting. Only way to recover was disconnect the second or additional external hard drives and devices and reboot the laptop(s). I'd plug in a second USB 3.0 hard drive (various brands, powered or unpowered) and if the drive was recognized by the Renesas controller, Renesas USB driver would shortly there after hang, freezing the USB 3.0 port, and disconnect all USB 3.0 devices. Because these laptops have a single USB 3.0 port these Renesas Extensible Host Controller issues have prevented the ability to use more than one USB 3.0 external hard drive no matter what USB 3.0 hub was used (various brands, both powered and unpowered). I've struggled for many years with the Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller disconnects on two older Toshiba laptops.
